Mac Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick

11 February 2016 | 2 Comments

Hello Sunshine

As some of you will know I am more of a lip liner girl than a lipstick or lip gloss girl. I just feel like lip liner’s last so much longer and I can really shape my lips nicely. However, on the odd occasion I do like to experiment.  I fell in love with Nyx’s butter glosses and they have become one of my holy grail lip products. Majority of the time I do prefer a more matte look than glossy. So when I heard about Mac’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick’s I just had to try them.

When testing out a new product, I always pick a lighter-everyday shade along with a dark sexy shade. Mademoiselle and Oh, Lady were perfect picks for the testing phase. Before I let you in on my thoughts, I wanted to tell you a little about the new range. There are 15 gorgeous shades to choose from. From nude to vampy. For those of you that are not very familiar with liquid lipsticks, here are a few quick facts:

  1. They dry matte. It may seem like a gloss at first but surprise… it’s not.
  2. They are meant to last a really, really, REALLY long time.
  3. Once the product is on, it’s pretty darn difficult to take off.
  4. The lipstick won’t transfer onto glasses or your boyfriends lips.

The packaging of the liquid lipsticks are typical Mac. Simple and classy. It has the lid of their lipsticks and the bottom is just like their glosses, transparent so you are able to see the shade.

And now onto my thoughts. Are the Retro Matte liquid lipsticks totally fetch or is it just not happening?

I decided to first try out the Mademoiselle first. This is a rather bright coral color. I was slightly taken back by just how bright it looked on me, but it slowly started to grow on me. I sadly found that once the product had dried, that it was rather flaky and my lips aren’t dry. I left it to dry and applied a second application. It seemed to have helped the situation but I wasn’t over the moon about the end result. The lipstick dried very matte and it wasn’t planning on going anywhere. It did last a really long time and it was hard to remove, i’ll give it that. The long wear however doesn’t make up for the fact that my lips didn’t look kissable. I decided to try again. This time I took a lip liner and applied it all over my lips and then applied the liquid lipstick. This seemed to have helped quite a bit, it is almost like the lip liner created a barrier between my lips and the liquid lipstick. If you are having similar issues to me, see if the lip liner helps.

As you can tell in the above picture, my lips appear cracked. I think the expression on my face says it all – not impressed. I never give up though, I will figure out a way to make this color work.

Moving onto Oh, Lady. After trying Mademoiselle, I was a little skeptical about trying Oh, Lady. To my surprise, I freaken LOVED this one. No flaky nonsense. The product glided on beautifully, it’s so pigmented that a second coat would be a waste of product – a crime in actual fact. It’s a deep and seductive color. It dried so nicely. Matte perfection. Long wear – check! Transferable – nope! Wiping off – pretty darn difficult! In the 3 odd hours before I touched up, I had eaten and had something to drink and it hadn’t moved. Pretty impressive if you ask me. I felt like a vixen with it on.

Yaaaaassssssss. Totally feeling this one. Work it sista!

I’m in two minds about it. I honestly would not recommend this to anyone with fine lines, super dry or cracked lips. For those of you that are total lovers of Liquid Lipsticks and struggle with dry lips, I would suggest try prepping your lips before the application. Exfoliate and moisturize and see if that holds. Mixing a bit of sugar and coconut oil creates a great scrub. Am I crazy for the Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick range… not really. I feel that the darker shades result are MUCH better than the lighter. And it saddens me to say that because I really had high hopes for it. As much as I love Oh, Lady, I’d have to say that the final verdict is:

Fetch. Not TOTALLY fetch, just fetch.

The liquid lipsticks go for R330.00.

What are your thoughts on the Mac Retro Liquid Lipsticks? Have you tried any of the shades? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Have a fabulous day!

Nyx Cosmetics

Nyx cosmetics 2.

I don’t know if I am being a cheapskate but MAN has makeup become ridiculously expensive. I almost dropped dead when I was browsing some of the beauty brands. I have never been one to mind spending money on cosmetics, but for the girl on a budget the price hikes are no good. So now I am on a mission to find affordable products with great quality. I came across this brand in the beginning of the year and I have fallen in love. I’m actually quite shocked that I have never done a review on their products. Nyx Cosmetics was started by Toni Ko, a lady from Korea that moved to LA. She started up her brand at the age of 25 and just last year sold it to powerhouse L’Oreal. One of the best things about this brand is that it is not tested on animals. The products are totally affordable and really great quality – well at least the products that I have been playing around with are.

NYX Butter Gloss

This was one of the first products I bought from the brand. For those of you that don’t know I am not a huge lip gloss fan. However this butter gloss is ah-mazing! It’s well pigmented, long lasting, non-sticky and so moisturizing. All the shades are named after desserts which works so well as the smell of the gloss is delicious. They all have a sweet vanilla smell to them. It’s so hard to pick a shade as they are all so beautiful. The butter gloss has definitely become a part of my daily makeup routine and I can’t wait to grow my collection. At the moment I only have 4 of the butter glosses:

Eclair, Crème Brulee, Tiramisu & Apple Strudel

As you can tell I am very into the nudey kind of shades but I am slowly warming up to the brighter colours.

NYX Skinny Marker

The right tool for the perfect winged liner is essential. When the wing is on fleek then all’s good in the hood. I have become a huge fan of felt pens and the Skinny Marker from Nyx is my current go to tool. The thin tip of the pen makes it a lot easier to get your liner perfectly sharp and on point. The Carbon Black liner finishes off matt. I have never had any issues with the product smudging or fading, I can go a whole day with it looking as if I had just applied it. The only down fall is that it dries out sooner than I’d like. Otherwise it’s an amazing product and with out a doubt I buy it every time.

NYX Eye Shadow Base

I have always prepped my eyes with concealer before applying any eye shadow, so when I came across the Nyx Eye Shadow Base I was in two minds about buying it. Now I’m glad I did. The base is pure white and when applied at first it seems a little greasy but fear not it dries very nicely. Most of you will know the phrase: less is more, this applies when applying this product. There is no need to plaster it on. Once I applied eye shadow to the base, the colour intensified more than ever. I must say that I am quite impressed with this little find, even my eye shadows with very little pigmentation pop. I get a good 7 – 8 hours wear out of this eye shadow base before I need to go for a slight touch up, which to me isn’t bad AT ALL.

NYX  Push-Up Bra for Your Brows

Last but not least, this little product caught my eye because of the name – Push-Up Bra for Your Brows . As some of you will know I am all about eye brows. I truly believe that your eye brows can make of break your look. So keeping them on point is essential. This Duo Eye Pencil is really super. On the one side you have an Eye Brow pencil, the consistency is good and it doesn’t rub off easy. The product glides on like magic and fills in the brows really well. And on the other side there is a highlighter pencil, in a very light pinkish colour with a creamy texture. The highlighter is used to polish the look. It is added just under the eye brows and blended out slightly. The product is blendable and makes your eye brows pop so nicely.

Nyx Brow & Highlight Pencil

If you are looking for an affordable brand with great quality I would get to your closest Click store and check out Nyx Cosmetics. You will not be sorry. My only wish is that they bring more of their products to South Africa like the Contour and Highlight Palette… Hint Hint… Nudge Nudge!

Head done to your nearest Clicks Store (South Africa Only) as they are having a 3 for 2 special on their Nyx Cosmetics. Can I get an AMEN! Enjoy the shopping 🙂

Let me know if you have tried out the brand and what you think?

Stay Fabulous & Stylish
